CLAIRVOYANCE – Threshold of Nothingness
Year: 2022
Label: Blood Harvest
Rating: 7 / 10
Another slab of cavernously black Death Metal with the sepulchral spirit of “modern old school". I have already written about how tired I am of these identical releases, so (unlike the people who record it) I will not repeat myself. But I can't help but note that the young Polish band CLAIRVOYANCE at least did a good job on the riffs: "Threshold of Nothingness" sounds very dynamic and even cheerful - as much as possible within the framework of this gloomy style. This mini album, believe it or not, has a character, so it's not one-off music like most of the "OSDM Revival".
SLASHER DAVE – Cannibal Death Gods
Year: 2023
Label: Hells Headbangers Records
Rating: Friday 13th Holocaust
This collection combines the "Cannibal Death Gods" dilogy from Slasher Dave (member of ACID WITCH). Dave has been creating horror ambient in the style of old horror films for a very long time, and that's what he offers on this grand release. The tracks here are inspired by all the classics of the bloody trash, so you will find both disturbing retrowave and a cannibalistic brutal tribal. Keep in mind that more soulful cinema (like “Phantasm” or "Hellraiser") has nothing to do with this. The music reflects exclusively the mundane aspects of horror: pain, violence, blood, violent fights, torture and so on. Fans of "Cannibal Holocaust" and "Beyond the Darkness" should be thrilled.
SARCOPHAGUM – Conduits to the Underworld
Year: 2023
Label: Nuclear Winter Records
Rating: 7,3 / 10
The debut project of the Australian band. If you take modern GORGUTS and simplify it by 3 times, you get “Conduits to the Underworld". A characteristic feature of the music are those sad passages that manifested themselves in the work of Canadians (or, alternatively, in DEATHSPELL OMEGA) after their return to the scene, which fall on Death Metal with a sound in the style of “Šahrartu” of EXIMPERITUS. And this is very good, because such a dark melancholy works perfectly on its own, and even more so on a foundation of good riffs.
HIBERNUS MORTIS – The Monoliths of Cursed Slumber
Year: 2022
Label: Blood Harvest
Rating: 7,8 / 10
Memento Mori, because, firstly, how can you forget about it if this is already the third Death Metal release in today's Blitz, and secondly, this particular Spanish label has always specialized in publishing bands that sound like INCANTATION. But I don't get promos from it anymore, so I'm writing about a similar release from Blood Harvest. The US band HIBERNUS MORTIS obviously loves not only INCANTATION, but also Swedish Death Metal, so two influences are combined here. From the first, they have tenacious sound and the characteristic warlike drumming, from the second - the daring character and dynamics. It turns out very well: quick changes in pace do not let you get bored. And the lyrics are worth reading, because they interact unexpectedly well with the sound content.
NETHERMANCY – Worship Evil Sacrifice
Year: 2023
Label: Helldprod Records
Rating: 6,66 / 10
A new album from the project of relentless J.A. from the legendary Portuguese band DECAYED. A mix of everything at once: there is a DARKTHRONE–style song, a BATHORY/NECROMANTIA-style song, an IMPALED NAZARENE-style song, a CELTIC FROST-style song, a MARDUK-style song... performed competently, energetically and maliciously - well, why give it a try!
