The new album of BLOODRAIN is a very interesting event for me, but “Resurgam” appeared, perhaps, at the most fucked-up moment, and I had a chance to listen to it only at the end of 2022. The album received two editions at once - the Russian one from Metal Race and the Western European one from Ketzer. The first one has a cover of RUNNING WILD as a bonus, the second one has a cover of VON; there are also differences in the design.
Musically, "Resurgam" goes the same way as ”Adora Satanae". I didn't notice any outstanding changes. But the totality of small changes still makes the impression different. The new album has a much higher quality sound and a slightly lower degree of aggression, the music, despite the traditionally frenzied intensity, has become more measured. As a result, the album turned out to be more restrained and consistent. In the end, it became similar to "Nomen Nostrum Legio” that also wasn't inclined to outbursts of fervent hatred. And, in my opinion, this is bad – the emotional component of BLOODRAIN's creativity, when it works properly, I appreciate much more than smooth playing and high-quality sound. At the same time, it is interesting that the cover of RUNNING WILD is performed, as they say, from the depths of their souls. In addition, on the new album, the band allowed themselves a little self-plagiarism. For example, the song "The Queen in Gold" suspiciously resembles "Beyond Law, Beyond Morals" and I have also heard the main riff from ”Night Stalker" somewhere in a slightly different form. But, even against the background of the above-mentioned claims, the songs turned out to be very strong, and for BLOODRAIN, this is by no means a step back - rather, a little to the side.
What has really changed is the lyrical component. From the lyrics of the songs, almost all sincere eulogies for the glory of Satan somehow quietly disappeared, and almost all the vacant space was occupied by various curiosities - for example, there is a son about Dyatlov Pass, or works based on Wells and de Sade. Thus, thematically (and in a sense musically) "Resurgam" is more like misanthropic Heavy Metal.
The physical edition, unfortunately, cannot boast of a distinctive beauty, since the booklet contains only a photo of the band and a cover made by the vocalist of ЛЕТАЛЬНЫЙ ИСХОД. Details on a video.
