ASYLUM – 3-3-88
Year of release: 2018
Label: Shadow Kingdom Records
Rating: 7 / 10
"3-3-88” is a previously unreleased album of an old doom metal band from the USA, which now bears the name UNORTHODOX. The material here, as you understand, is from the end of the 80s, so his spirit is fine. The music resembles BLACK SABBATH quite a bit, but the style of performance is more aggressive and fast. In general, quite worthy of retro.
BLACK MOLD – Atavism
Year of release: 2018
Label: Helldprod Records
Rating: 6,7 / 10
Primitive raw metal in the vein of early DARKTHRONE and late RAVENCULT - something like that. I mean it's very angry, primitive and straightforward. The edition of 80 copies on cassettes is quite suitable for this demo, as well as the cover. Pure hatred!
GOATHAMMER – Ceremony of Morbid Destruction
Year of release: 2018
Label: Hells Headbangers Records
Rating: 7 / 10
This release was a bit of a disappointment to me. It is good, but with such a name, image and publisher I expected much more. The symbiosis of the dirty abomination of PROFANATICA with the battle madness of BLASPHEMY and the melancholy of MUTIILATION in practice turned out to be deprived of any recognizable traits. The individual segments are really great - there are interesting riffs and ancient black magic here - but most of the music is very mediocre. Well, at least the malicious necromantic component in the lyrics does not fail.
GRISLY – The Spectral Wars
Year of release: 2018
Label: Xtreem Music
Rating: 6 / 10
Incredibly, Rogga Johansson has another project where he plays Swedish Death Metal. I have already lost count of how many of them he has. Probably more than the stars in the sky. It should be noted that the music of all these projects is good, but the differences between the projects of a hyperactive guitarist are vanishingly small. In my opinion, every time he decides to change the pace of his playing or buying the new amp, he creates another band. I wonder if it would be better to take a pause and record one or two great albums instead of releasing 5-6 average albums per year. The Spectral Wars” is quite possible to listen to - it’s a canonical Swedeath with a groove and stable mid pace, it is easy to digest. But if you are at least a little familiar with the works of Rogga, you probably already ate too many of such albums.
NASTY SURGEONS – Infectious Stench
Year of release: 2018
Label: Xtreem Music
Rating: 5,8 / 10
The second album of the Spanish brutal band characterized by simple compositional solutions, badly written drums and ineradicable love for CARCASS. I think CARCASS is shit, and this record I didn't like even though it actually sounds more like Russian FORMALIN (E). The cover here is definitely better than the content.
