Review: EXXXEKUTIONER – Death Sentence

Year of release: 2018
Label: Uthar Records
Rating: 6 / 10

The official biography of this young British gang happily tells that the guys recorded their first demo on a cassette recorder with one microphone, playing it live in the studio, and then ... “released” the demo on YouTube. This fact in itself causes cognitive dissonance, which extends to the full-length album. “Death Sentence” is absolutely right type of music: evil thrash with speed elements, reminiscent of all the classics at once, even those of КОРРОЗИЯ МЕТАЛЛА. The publisher pressed the album directly onto vinyl bypassing the CD, which should hint at the total old-school nature of the material. But it's not so simple. Behind EXXXEKUTIONER lies falsehood, aggravated by the mastering from Joel Grind. The latter is often blamed for the wrong approach to the processing of classic things, and for the first time I begin to feel the validity of these accusations. “Death Sentence” sounds too clean and sonorous, although I should note that analogue hiss would hardly have saved the situation. A good group of this kind is distinguished from a bad one by the fact that it, being perfectly aware of the frivolity of the nature of its work, is still believes in something. A small tongue of satanic fire in the souls of musicians is able to kindle a big flame. And if dedication is really strong, the group is capable to create masterpieces - look at NIFELHEIM. With EXXXEKUTIONER, I don't see anything like that; they just fool around, even though they do it very skillfully. But their tomfoolery is only interesting to themselves, and they are not able to offer anything that would distinguish them from hundreds of other colleagues on this old school scene.
