Review: FAUSTCOVEN – In the Shadow of Doom

Year of release: 2018
Label: Nuclear War Now! Productions
Rating: 9,1 / 10

Norway still got it! The fourth album of the project, led by some guy named Gunnar Hansen, made a big impression on me. FAUSTCOVEN performs satanic archaic Doom Death Metal in the most correct form. From the first seconds it becomes clear how sinister this music is. It is based on the techniques of the traditional doom metal, however, it is imbued with an incredibly thick darkness and suffocating wickedness. The disturbing guitar tremolo, the rumble of ritual drums and the caw of a rotten, dead pharynx seem to come from an abandoned crypt connected to ancient tunnels going deep into the earth's crust to unimaginable distances. The manner of performance very reliably recreates the feeling of something foul and unholy. Everything clanks, swings, festers and stupefies with the gusts of underground winds. I can easily say that FAUSTCOVEN is a doomy version of CULTES DES GHOULES. If you like one, you will definitely like the second, you godless pervert. At the moment “In the Shadow of Doom” is one of the best albums I heard in 2018, if not the best.
