Review: SATAN’S HALLOW – Satan’s Hallow

Year: 2017
Label: Underground Power Records
Rating: 7,9 / 10

I recently reviewed a wonderful mini album by MIDNIGHT DICE, and now I got to the SATAN'S HALLOW formation, four of the five members of which formed MIDNIGHT DICE, when the fifth member, the guitarist and main author of the music, decided to abandon the scene.

Despite the fact that the authors of the music in these bands are different, SATAN'S HALLOW and MIDNIGHT DICE sound very close to each other. The difference is mostly thematic: where MIDNIGHT DICE has a soulful flavor of the 80s and goes to the race with sunset, SATAN'S HALLOW propose hysterical running through the cemetery from haunting creatures of darkness. But it hardly affects the music. "Satan's Hallow" was a modern underground heavy metal band: frisky, dynamic, bright. Perhaps the only great difference from MIDNIGHT DICE is the smaller "squariness" of the structures. The band studied the precepts of IRON MAIDEN and made compositions, each fragment of which clings to the next, creating the necessary flow. Just what we love!

The album also has a good sound, which lacks a little bit of originality, but doesn't lack of expressiveness at all. It is very pleasant to listen to modern heavy metal that has not been treated with file to complete smoothness. Again, I'd like to mention Mandy Martillo's great assertive vocals. If a woman can sing metal (not "metal opera" or pseudo-growling) it always sounds better than any male vocals, and I mean that. Looking at the Bandcamp page and the prices for the physical editions of “Satan's Hallow”, I can confidently say that the band had a frenzied support, which I find well deserved.
