BROKEN SPIRIT – Demo Collections 2012-2017
Year of release: 2018
Label: Black Gangrene Productions
Rating: no rating
A collection of demos from an Australian project published in Portugal, which is not surprising when you start listening to it. They like this kind of material: blackest, randomly recorded, rough and primitive. I applaud this when it's done wisely. But you can’t say the same about the first demo: the vocals on it were recorded in the most stupid way ever, drowning out everything. The author probably wanted to make the material even more repulsive, but he just made it utter shit. The second demo is pure chaos where you can't tell left from right, but in a good sense. Third too. The last tracks on the disc seem to be more diverse, but at the same time they give away this lowlife amateurity characterestic of Depressive Illusions releases. In general, for the final evaluation of the compilation, you need to have an in-depth familiarity with the project, for which I have neither the time nor the desire. The creativity of BROKEN SPIRIT can be either a real dark art or a mediocre fuckery masked by tons of noise and ostentatious misanthropy. I cautiously lean toward the second option.
NAWAHARJAN – Lokabrenna
Year of release: 2020
Label: Amor Fati Productions
Rating: 8,2 / 10
The purest and most honest ARCKANUM worship from Germany. Adjusted for origin, this is an extremely thorough continuation of Shaamatae's late work: starting with “Antikosmos”. The same anti-cosmic philosophy, laid on the dark Germanic heathenism, the same deep and meticulous work with runes, languages and mythology. The differences are less melodic riffs and some separate fragments, uncharacteristic for the work of ARCKANUM. And even then, you can notice them only with careful listening. And I advise you to listen to the album very carefully: in an hour, it will tell you a lot of things. Great release.
NECROSTRIGIS – From Bleak Cavernous Chambers
Year of release: 2020
Label: Nebular Carcoma Records
Rating: 6 / 10
Another of the host of projects by Wened "Wilk" Slawibor, in this case, the great "Wolfvamphyr". The glorious VENEDAE that gave Vened a ticket in life, have always been contry inbreed band, but somehow still very close to my heart, even cute. This peasantry was brought by Vened to all his other projects where he is allowed to do something creative. BLOOD STRONGHOLD, for example, does not suffer from this, but NECROSTRIGIS...
- How would you describe your views?
- I am a pagan fascist satanic heathen! Sieg Heil!
When a person is constantly torn to pieces between different parts of his nature, it is not surprising that his work has a noticeable element of pretentiousness. NECROSTRIGIS is Black Metal from a musician who is not Black Metal in spirit, but only sympathizing and understanding. The music on this release is a diligent parody of various old Polish bands which Wened, no doubt, respects, but never manages to surpass and even repeat. It is not bad and not good. You can listen to this release, but it's not necessary.
MUSCIPULA – Little Chasm of Horrors
Year of release: 2020
Label: Caligari Records
Rating: 7,5 / 10
Catastrophically heavy and dark Death Doom Metal. Although this is just a demo, the three tracks have their own concept, inspired by the swamps of the American Southeast. Music draws well the image of a bloated, champing giant creature, dragging its victim into a quagmire...
NECRO CHAOS – Spiral of Obscurity
Year of release: 2020
Label: Helldprod Records
Rating: 7 / 10
Nice debut release of the Portuguese trio. Old-fashioned Death Metal with Thrash Metal elements, something between Swedes and early DEATH. No innovations, everything is done as it should be.
