Blitz reviews 19: BLOODBATH, GIGGEROTAH, REVOLUTIO, TAPHOS, YGFAN

19th part of short reviews.

BLOODBATH – The Arrow of Satan Is Drawn
Year of release: 2018
Label: Peaceville Records
Rating: 5 / 10

It is a custom to write a lot about albums of big bands, but in this case there is nothing special to write about. This is an absolutely secondary piece of shit unsuccessfully disguised as Swedish Death Metal (and at first, almost as Black Metal - Joakim Karlsson from CRAFT is the one to blame). Somewhere from the third song, everything becomes predictable and nauseously boring. Holmes' vocals are ridiculous - where are you when we need you so much, Professor Moriarty? There is no spark of inspiration in this album, it's the worst thing that BLOODBATH ever made - and their discography is far from perfect.

GIGGEROTAH – Ultra-Violence
Year of release: 2016 / 2018 (this version)
Label: S.N.D. Productions
Rating: 7 / 10

Very good Death Thrash Metal from the member of LASHBLOOD, SS-18, ASTHENIC SYN. Like the first album, it sounds much better than you can imagine by looking at the cover (seriously, what is this design?). Fast, brutal, verified and very cold-blooded music - just right for voicing murders with axes, knives, bats, “rosettes” and other piercing-cutting objects. In slow pieces, it sounds similar to DEATH, but without this melodic bullshit.

REVOLUTIO – Vagrant
Year of release: 2018
Label: Inverse Records
Rating: 6,8 / 10

I would never have touched such music even by mistake, but the Italian musician Davide Pulito was too polite and insistent, and I couldn't refuse. REVOLUTIO plays something so incomprehensible to me and very melodic: something between groove, metalcore, heavy metal and power metal. “Post-apocalyptic alternative metal,” as the band calls it. In short, it must be horrible. But what is this? The songs are good! They got a good feeling, a spark, and the correct placement of accents. If I viewed metal as a merely entertaining phenomenon, I would probably return to this band again and again.

TAPHOS – Come Ethereal Somberness
Year of release: 2018
Label: Blood Harvest
Rating: 6 / 10

Not too big disappointment, but still... After a compilation of earlier recordings of these Danish deathsters, containing very putrid and predatory metal, I was expecting something similar on the album, but on a large scale. What I got is a puerile version of MORBID ANGEL that sounds too slim and not atmospheric at all. Front cover is worth more than all the music on an album, taken together.

YGFAN – Hamvakból…
Year of release: 2018
Label: Sun & Moon Records
Rating: 5,3 / 10

Post--metal from Hungary performed by four bearded (strangely, not tattooed) guys. Everything is standard: voiceless singing, a lot of senseless acoustics and ATMOSPHERE, sloppy "unconventional" structures of compositions (however, in terms of flowing of the songs Hungarians have achieved much greater success than many of their colleagues in the scene). The only good thing here is the sound of the record. The rest is not really bad, it’s just dull and empty.
