Review: JYOTIṢAVEDĀṄGA – Thermogravimetry Warp Continuum

Year of release: 2018
Label: Larval Productions
Rating: 8 / 10

This interesting project has no less interesting line-up. Bend your fingers - Sadist (THAT one) on guitars, Horth (KARNA, GOATPSALM, SICKRITES) on synths, AR from the young Indian formation BANISH on vocals and Andrey Kim (BALANCE INTERRUPTION, DO SKONU) as session drummer. Jyotiṣavedāṅga is an ancient Indian Sanskrit treatise on astronomy and astrology. The text of the treatise describes the rules for calculating the movement of the Sun and the Moon for conducting Vedic sacrifices. Deep theme, which, with proper disclosure, perfectly combines with extreme metal. The concept of the album is written on the inlay: "The unknown 5th dimensional exploration and the understanding of the true chaotic nature of the ever increasing entropy in accordance with the laws of Thermodynamics, existence through pure chance and chaos. The 5th dimension - timeless and infinite. Strategically placed between light and obscurity, between silence and superstition, between good and evil, lies between the pit of all fears and the peak of all true knowledge". Music itself is really close to the firstborn chaos. It is based on the traditional War Metal, but literally everything is not done according to the rules. The sound is viscous, vibrating, not like anything. Rare (unfortunately, really rare) synthesizer parts create a grandiose otherworldly atmosphere. They are helped by sinister interludes with different sorts of cosmic signals and noises. Vocals are monstrous, words can not understand. Compositions seem to be quite easy to trace from beginning to end, but they constantly "float away" somewhere to the side, so you need to listen to them very carefully. The whole medicine works well: "Thermogravimetry Warp Continuum" turned out to be one of those inhuman albums, where until the last seconds there is no feeling that the music is performed by ordinary living people. I will not say that it is a masterpiece, but there is definitely some food for your brains and deep sounds for your ears.
